Leah Lugimbana, Senior Research Scientist, employee of the National Institute for Medical Research, Dar es salaam, Tanzania, since year 2000. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and Biology with education, from the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. She has postgraduate qualifications in Environmental Science from Saarland University, Germany and Public Health from Lund University, Sweden. She was awarded scholarships for her postgraduate studies from Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) to study in Germany, and Swedish Institute (SI) Scholarship to study in Sweden. She has received various research training and skills: on Planetary Health; Climate change and Health and environment Organized by different universities in Germany. She participated in Summer Schools sponsored by DAAD on Occupational Health Crossing Borders from Ludwig-Maximilian-Universität (LMU) in Munich, Germany and on Integrated Watershed Management in Bwathonaro Catchment area, Meru, Kenya. She participated a course on Deficiencies in the Assessment of Low Carcinogenic Risk Arising from Environmental and Occupational Hazards Under the auspices of Prof. Klaus Töpfer, United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP), in Bonn, Germany. Her professional and research interest include: Environmental pollution of air, water, soil and plastics; Pesticides residue and Heavy metal analysis in environmental samples; Microplastic pollution; Climate change and its impact on human/ public health; Climate change adaptation and mitigation; Greenhouse gas and Global warming on human health; Carbon footprint; Planetary health and human behavior; Occupational health and safety; Solid waste management; and public health prevention of diseases. Leah has worked and has vast research experience on Environmental health, pollution, chemistry and sanitation; Occupational health and safety; solid waste management; Public health prevention of diseases; Persistent Organic Pollutants and heavy metals analysis in fish, vegetables, water, and soil; Column Chromatographic isolation of Persistent Organic Pollutants such as Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) and pesticides and their residues from tissues of living organisms; Gas chromatographic determination of pesticides and Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) and their residues; Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS) techniques to determine heavy metals in environmental samples and Thin Layer Chromatography techniques for determination of antimalarial drugs and their Metabolites in human fluid. Leah is an active member of Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) in Europe since 2005. She is an active member of Deutsche Allianz Klimawandel und Gesundheit (KLUG) German Climate Change and Health Alliance in Germany since 2023.
