The National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) is a government parastatal institution established by the Act of Parliament in (NIMR Act Cap 59 R.E.2002). It is the only public health research institute in the country. The institute has 8 centers across Tanzania; NIMR Muhimbili (NIMR- Muhimbili) is one of the centers.

NIMR-Muhimbili have been collaborating with all disease control programs of the Ministry of Health such as Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) section, HIV/AIDS Control Programme (NACP), National Tuberculosis control programs etc in conducting implementation, operational and clinical research in Tanzania. The institute has a functional ethics committee, which is crucial for reviewing and monitoring of all health research in the country.
